Model 1270:
Linear Position Monitor

The INCON Model 1270 Programmable Linear Position Monitor is a highly advanced solid-state instrument which measures the absolute linear position or velocity of a magnetostrictive transducer. It provides both a user-definable visual panel indication, and optional analog and digital signal outputs suitable for a variety of monitoring and control applications. This unit features a rugged and extremely accurate absolute linear measurement system at a lower price than comparable incremental systems. In addition, the unit is completely programmable, so that it can be used in a number of different applications..

INSTALLATION

The Model 1270 simply snaps into a standard DIN panel cutout (dimensions are given under Outline Dimensions). The unit operates with a novel position sensor called magnetostrictive (refer to the section on Theory of Operation). The position transducer consists of a stainless steel shaft with a magnet that is free to move along the shaft. The Model 1270 measures the absolute distance that the magnet moves along the shaft. A number of different magnet configurations are available, including floats. Consult the factory for more information. The remaining wiring connections are explained separately in the following sections.

THEORY OF OPERATION

The Model 1270 is a precision instrument that measures position by timing the total propagation time from the generation of a current pulse to receiving a reflected torsional wave on a magnetostrictive material. The propagation time of the torsional wave depends on the position of a magnet that is placed around the magnetostrictive material. Therefore, the propagation time is an accurate indication of the absolute position of the magnet around the magnetostrictive material. The Model 1270 performs a digital signal processing algorithm that converts the propagation time to a digital display and analog output corresponding to linear position or velocity of the moving magnet.

OPERATION

The front panel keypad is used to select one of two scale factors, zero the display, set the display to a predetermined value, or to clear the latched relay outputs. The analog output can be programmed to provide an electrical output corresponding to a particular range of linear motion.

Applications

Applications

The Model 1270 was designed to replace linear potentiometers, LVDTs, inductosyns, linear optical encoders and linear magnetic encoders where precise linear position monitoring is required. In particular, the Model 1270 provides an absolute position monitor in the price range of incremental position monitors. This product can be used for position monitoring in machine tool applications, such as woodworking, punchpress and specialty machines; industrial measuring applications, such as liquid level and valve position; and other critical linear position measurements that require precise and stable absolute position monitoring. The unit can also be used to monitor the linear velocity of a moving object. It can be programmed to provide relay limit outputs at various positions. Additional outputs are available through an interface port.

Capabilities

Capabilities

Several remote 1250B monitors may be driven from the same 1265 transmitter.

  • A remote 1250B monitor can be up to 1200 feet away when wired with 16 gauge wire
  • With heavier gauge wire this distance can be up to 1 mile
  • Fully sealed, weatherproof construction
  • Retrofit any existing LTC or V/R in the field

Features

Features

Use of semiconductor technology provides priceto- performance ratio never before achieved in linear position monitoring systems.

Uses a rugged, absolute magnetostrictive transducer - does not require rezeroing or periodic recalibration. Display accuracy is better than 0.05% of full scale. Explosion-proof and waterproof transducers are available.

Simultaneously provides visual panel indication, proportional analog output and digital interface.

All critical parameters can be programmed by the user, including two different scale factors, analog output endpoints and relay limits. All programmed data is stored during power failures.

Operates from a self-contained power supply.

Digital measurement technique assures long, trouble-free performance, unaffected by power failure or electrical interference.

AVAILABLE OPTIONS

There are a number of options that can be ordered to enhance the basic unit:

  • Analog Outputs
  • BCD Outputs
  • RS-232 Serial Interface
  • Two Internal Relay Outputs
  • External Relay Outputs

Refer to the Operating Manual or consult the factory for more information.
