Model 1275:
The INCON Model 1275 is a high performance linear limit switch and position monitoring instrument designed
for industrial control and measurement applications. It utilizes a linear magnetostrictive position sensor, which
features ruggedness, non-contact operation, complete immunity to oil and dirt, as well as very high accuracy. The
Model 1275 includes eight control outputs which can be easily re-programmed or adjusted from the unit’s front
panel, even while the controlled machine is operating. Its five digit display can show current position in any
engineering units, and also provides an efficient man-machine interface during setup and programming. The
microprocessor-based Model 1275 is extremely easy to configure and operate, featuring simple, yet flexible.,
menu-driven programming and setup from its front panel. It may optionally be equipped to report position in

THEORY OF OPERATION
The Model 1275 measures the the elapsed time from the generation of an interrogation current pulse to the
sensing of a torsional shock wave pulse in the head of the sensor. This time interval is directly proportional to
the position of the sensor’s magnetic ring along its shaft. The model 1275 can also be programmed to accumulate
the total elapsed time of many interrogation and return pulse cycles (this is called recirculation), thereby greatly
increasing the resolution of the measurement. The embedded microcomputer calculates scaled position values
from the accumulated counts, and loads them into the display and output buffers. All set point comparisons are
done at the counter level, to eliminate delays associated with the scaling and processing of the data.
This product can be used for differential position monitoring in machine tool applications such as wood-working, punchpress, and specialty machines; industrial measuring applications such as liquid-level and valve position; and other critical linear position measurements that require precise and stable absolute position monitoring.
The unit can also be programmed to provide relay limit outputs at various positions. Additional outputs are
available through an interface port.
OPERATION
During normal operation the Model 1275 displays the current position in scaled units. The operator may enter
the set-point modification menu by simply depressing the menu button. He may then scroll between the eight
set-points and select the one he wishes to modify. The set-point may then be incremented or decremented until
the desired value has been reached. During the process of programming the set-points, the Model 1275’s outputs
remain fully operational. This feature allows the operator to “tune” or “nudge” the set-points as required.
The menu-driven set-up mode cannot be entered until a momentary connection is made between terminals 3
and 4 on the rear of the Model 1275. This provision acts as an effective lockout of unauthorized modification of
the unit’s configuration. The set-up mode allows for complete configuration of the Model 1275 including optional
features. Refer to the operating manual for a complete description of the set-up and operating modes.
SCALING AND CALIBRATION
The Model 1275 require no calibration. You must simply load the sensor’s exact propagation speed (propagation
constant or gradient) into the 1275’s set-up menu. The unit will automatically display in inches. You may then set
a zero point, preset the unit to a particular value, or scale the system to other units if you need to.
The Model 1275 is designed to be a high performance replacement for electro-mechanical limit switches, as well as for bulky, and expensive electronic limit controllers. It can accurately synchronize machine functions to the absolute position of the magnetostrictive sensor, providing up to 8 programmable ON/ OFF set-points, per unit. The model 1275 can be used in a broad variety of applications including:
| • Automatic assembly | • Die casting machines | • Hydraulic systems | • Molding machines |
| • Cutoff machines | • Food processing | • Materials handling | • Packaging machines |
